'Simple Poetry' in Pattani: Biennale Review Finds Hope in Unlikely Venues
Max Crosbie-Jones reviews the Pattani Biennale 2026, 'Simple Poetry' — staged across dormitories, a juvenile home and other unlikely venues through November 1 — for ArtReview Asia, finding a hopeful aftertaste in works including prisoner portraits and the Sarong Warriors' stand against a gas pipeline.
The Pattani Biennale 2026, titled 'Simple Poetry' and curated by Anuwat Apimukmongkon, unfolds across venues scattered through Pattani, running through November 1. Writing for ArtReview Asia, Max Crosbie-Jones finds the biennale's meaning inseparable from where it happens: exhibitions installed in student dormitories and a juvenile detention home, places where art rarely goes and where its arrival carries extra weight. For many visitors, these are not neutral white cubes but charged, lived-in spaces. The review lingers on work rooted in the region's tensions. The Sarong Warriors — a group of local women — appear in connection with their opposition to a gas pipeline, a reminder that the biennale's gentle title does not mean disengagement. Portraits of prisoners, made within the carceral system, ask who gets to be seen and on what terms, turning the act of depiction into something closer to testimony. Among the individual works singled out is Nitipong Nikaji's 'Identity' (2026), a piece that probes how selves are formed, labeled and constrained. In the context of the dormitory and juvenile-home venues, questions of identity stop being abstract: the audience includes young people living inside the very institutions the work interrogates. Crosbie-Jones's verdict gives the review its title — a 'hopeful aftertaste.' The biennale does not resolve the contradictions of its setting, nor does it pretend to. But by placing art in the middle of everyday and institutional life, 'Simple Poetry' suggests that culture can still open small clearings: moments of recognition, dignity and imagination in places built to foreclose them.
