Norval Foundation is presenting the first museum-scale solo exhibition of Kate Gottgens, one of South Africa's most internationally exhibited painters. Titled 'Unsteady Realms' and opening in Gallery 1 on September 15, 2026, the show brings together new and existing paintings spanning more than a decade of her practice. Gottgens' work is known for its dreamlike, ambiguity-laden scenes in which women occupy spaces that feel at once familiar and elusive. Drawing on personal photographs, found imagery and fragments of everyday life, her layered surfaces treat identity as unstable and time as elastic, inviting viewers to embrace uncertainty rather than seek fixed narratives. Curated by Carmen Joubert, the exhibition runs through February 2027 and positions Gottgens' quiet insistence on ambiguity as central to contemporary South African painting.
