The New Museum has announced the artists for the sixth edition of its Triennial, which will run from 4 February to 16 May 2027. Thirty-six artists and collectives from 34 countries will take part in 'The Outside Expands', the institution's first Triennial since it reopened in March following a two-year, $82 million expansion that doubled its exhibition space. The edition is co-curated by Vivian Crockett, the museum's Allen and Lola Goldring Curator, and Isabella Rjeille, a curator at the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP). It is also the first Triennial mounted under director Massimiliano Gioni, who was promoted to the role in August after more than a decade as artistic director. The Triennial remains the only recurring international exhibition in New York devoted to early-career artists. The title takes its cue from a 1979 urban intervention by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3, known as X Galeria, in which the group taped 'X' marks and the message 'what is inside remains, what is outside expands' across gallery entrances in São Paulo. Staged during Brazil's civil-military dictatorship, the action urged artists to look beyond institutions in a period of severe repression. The curators, both Brazilian-born, said they settled on the title in 2023, as authoritarian governments gained ground and artists faced censorship and persecution worldwide. Among the participants named are Virginia Chihota, Mandy El-Sayegh, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Josi, Jota Mombaça, and Agnes Questionmark. The curators describe the selection as turning toward practitioners who unsettle fixed ideas of territory, identity, gender, and sexuality, and who build alternative forms of kinship and collaboration. For a generation of emerging artists, a Triennial slot has historically served as a career accelerator, and the expanded building gives this edition more room than any previous one. With the opening still months away, the announcement sets the terms of a conversation about where the center of the art world sits — and what might grow once artists step outside it.
