The New Museum in New York has fixed the dates for the sixth edition of its Triennial. The exhibition will run from 4 February to 16 May 2027, the museum announced, making it the first Triennial since the building reopened in March following two years of construction on its expansion. The 2027 edition is co-curated by Vivian Crockett, a curator at the New Museum, and Isabella Rjeille, a curator at the Museu de Arte de São Paulo (MASP). It carries the title 'The Outside Expands', borrowed from a 1979 action by the Brazilian collective 3NÓS3. That year the group taped large Xs across the entrances of several São Paulo galleries, pairing them with the message 'What is inside remains, what is outside expands', as a way of urging cultural workers to think beyond institutional walls. The curators say the show will foreground artists who question structural logics and unsettle fixed ideas of territory and identity. The artist list spans five continents and mixes early-career figures with collectives and publishing practices: Jean Barth, Luz Broto, Virginia Chihota, Omyo Cho, Paloma Contreras Lomas, Biraaj Dodiya, Mandy El-Sayegh, Hamishi Farah, Fehras Publishing Practices, Levi van Gelder, Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork, Léann Herlihy, Jesús Hilario-Reyes, Nour Jaouda, Josi, Li Yong Xiang, Maria Louizou, Dakota Mace, Rui Magalhães, Rene Matić, Jota Mombaça, Cem Örgen, Linda Pongutá, Agnes Questionmark, Liesl Raff, Sofía Salazar Rosales, Florencia Sadir, Akane Saijo, Sin Wai Kin, Tiempo de Zafra, Thato Toeba, Paz Ulloa, T. Vinoja, Sun Woo, Inês Zenha and Kukay Bautista Zinampan. The Triennial is the only recurring international exhibition in New York devoted to early-career artists, and the 2027 edition will be closely watched as the first major test of the museum's expanded building.
