The National Gallery of Canada and the Sobey Art Foundation have opened the exhibition accompanying the 2026 Sobey Art Award, Canada's leading prize for contemporary visual artists. The show brings together recent work by this year's six regional finalists, spanning sculpture, installation, photography, painting, film, textiles, metalwork and land-based practices. The shortlist represents the breadth of current practice across the country: Melaw Nakehk'o (Circumpolar), Samuel Roy-Bois (Pacific), Audie Murray (Prairies), Lotus L. Kang (Ontario), Caroline Monnet (Quebec) and Shane Perley-Dutcher (Atlantic). Themes of memory, language, land, identity and cultural tradition run through the presentation. The exhibition is on view through January 3, 2027. The award winner, who receives $100,000, will be announced on November 14, 2026 during a celebration at the National Gallery of Canada; each of the five other finalists receives $25,000 and longlisted artists receive $10,000. Last year's winner was Tania Willard.
