M+ has launched the Pioneering Visions Initiative, a new major programme supported by CHANEL that will spotlight artists and makers who break new ground in their aesthetics, concepts and techniques. Announced through the Hong Kong museum's M+ Magazine, the initiative spans exhibitions, film screenings, talks and workshops, alongside original documentary content designed to travel beyond the museum's walls through digital access.

Ten artists anchor the programme: Cao Fei, Duan Jianyu, Hu Xiaoyuan, Kan Xuan, Kimsooja, Heidi Lau, Liang Yuanwei, Julie Mehretu, Sarah Sze and Yu Ji. The roster ranges across moving image, painting, sculpture and installation, pairing internationally established figures such as Mehretu and Kimsooja with a strong contingent of artists whose practices are rooted in China and Hong Kong, among them Cao Fei and Heidi Lau.

The first concrete project named under the banner is Sarah Sze's Centrifuge, an intricate and densely interconnected installation that will be presented at M+ in February 2027 — M+ lists it opening in the Focus Gallery on 27 February 2027. The presentation will mark the work's first exhibition anywhere since its premiere in Germany in 2017, giving Hong Kong audiences a rare chance to encounter one of Sze's most complex sculptural environments.

M+ frames Pioneering Visions around storytelling as much as display: sharing the stories of artists who rethink what their medium can do, and using those narratives to shape the ones that follow. With CHANEL's backing behind a multi-format programme rather than a single exhibition, the initiative signals how the West Kowloon museum intends to develop long-term, artist-centred commissions and content over the coming seasons.
