Mohan Sharma's 1976 Interior goes for $71,200 at Sotheby's, setting a new high
Mohan Sharma's Interior (1976) sold at Sotheby's London on September 29 for $71,200 (£53,800), over 8.5 times its low estimate and a 125% rise over his previous record of $30,500 set at Sotheby's in March 2025.

An oil painting by Mohan Sharma set a new auction record on September 29, when Interior (1976) sold at Sotheby's in London for $71,200 (£53,800) — more than eight and a half times its low estimate. The sale beat the artist's previous record by $40,700, a 125 percent increase, and was reported by HENI on September 30. The oil-on-canvas work had been traded only once before it returned to the saleroom, and the bidding evidently ran far past expectations. Its predecessor at the top of Sharma's market was Untitled (1971), which made $30,500 at Sotheby's on March 17, 2025 — in New York, according to the record table — so the new high arrived roughly eighteen months later. Notably, that earlier work, Untitled (1971), had never been traded before its 2025 sale — a first-time market appearance that made the record it set all the more striking. The margin is the story: a price more than eight and a half times the low estimate signals a market that the pre-sale assessment badly underestimated. Sharma's record progression now reads $71,200 in London (September 2026) above $30,500 in New York (March 2025), a jump that the record table pegs at 134 percent. Results like this, in which a single lot redraws an artist's auction history in one evening, are becoming a familiar feature of the market for under-recognized modernists. The sale arrived the same day Sotheby's London set a new benchmark for Sunayani Devi, making September 29 an unusually strong session for the house — and for Sharma, Interior now stands as his most valuable work at auction by a wide margin.
