A new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston hands the gallery walls to the city's youngest artists. "Can You Hear the City?" presents mosaic works created over several months by Boston-area youth in collaboration with Kelly Chen, a 2023 Northeastern graduate who has been leading the project through the museum's Community Arts Initiative. The show opened September 17 and remains on view through October 25, 2026. Sound is as central to the project as the mosaics themselves. Chen, who studied media studies and data science and has been active in Boston's experimental music scene, built the works around field recordings and sound collages that capture fragments of the participants' daily lives. Two audiovisual pieces by Chen accompany the exhibition, exploring how memories are preserved in digital space; she describes the project as a kind of time capsule of a single fall semester in the young makers' lives. The show asks visitors to notice what they usually tune out. Chen hopes people leave thinking about what they do or don't pay attention to, and how that attention shapes their experience of space — a pointed theme for a city where, in her words, it is easy to go into tunnel vision. The work is animated by the idea that people make art to show compassion and to express what they feel about the world. Unlike a typical temporary exhibition, the pieces have a second life already planned. When the show closes on October 25, the mosaics will travel to the youth organizations that made them, where they will stay permanently — a deliberate choice that keeps the work inside the communities that created it.
