The 2026 Lagos Biennial has named the 18 artists and collectives taking part in its fifth edition, titled The Museum of Things Unseen. The biennial, curated by Furen Dai, Chinyere Obieze and Sam Hopkins, runs from November 14 to December 6 in Eko Atlantic City, the artificial peninsula development in Lagos. The participant list mixes established international names with artists working across Africa and its diasporas: Ade Adekola, Ala Praxis, Caitlyn Min-ji Au, CAMP, Ha Bik Chuen, Jacob Höfle, Lagos Studio Archives, Olukemi Lijadu, Antoni Muntadas, New Culture Studios, Aki Sasamoto, Arcangelo Sassolino, Amie Siegel, Alafuro Sikoki-Coleman, Hito Steyerl, Ethel-Ruth Tawe, Bert Theis and Kara Walker. The curatorial frame asks which stories museums choose to tell, which they hide, and what structures shape those narratives — positioning the biennial itself as a counter-museum. Running alongside the main exhibition is OFFish, the biennial's official parallel program, whose participants were selected through an open call. They include Art Bridge in Lagos, the Greenbox Museum of Contemporary Art from Saudi Arabia, Future Ancestries, the Floating Museum x Lagos Space Programme, the Together – EU Pavilion, Parsons School of Design | The New School in New York, the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and Yaba College of Technology in Lagos. The edition will also unveil the Àkéte Collection, a new holding drawn from works shown in previous biennials alongside donations and loans from international museums and private collectors. Its inaugural roster spans dozens of artists — from Jude Samer, Nolan Oswald Dennis, Ndidi Dike and Emeka Ogboh to Tabita Rezaire, Victor Ehikhamenor and Demas Nwoko — signaling an ambition to build a lasting institutional collection for contemporary African art in Lagos.
