Giorgio Griffa gets his first Asian solo show at MASSIMODECARLO Hong Kong
MASSIMODECARLO Hong Kong opens its first solo exhibition in Asia by Giorgio Griffa on 16 October 2026 — an overview of the Italian painter's practice spanning more than half a century, to 30 January 2027.
MASSIMODECARLO opens a solo exhibition by Giorgio Griffa at its Hong Kong space on 16 October 2026 — the artist's first solo exhibition in Asia. Conceived as an overview of a practice spanning more than half a century, the show brings together works from the late 1970s to the present, drawn from four of the thirteen cycles that structure Griffa's work. It runs to 30 January 2027. The Italian painter's work is organised in numbered cycles that are never truly closed: in Griffa's painting, no cycle ever really comes to an end. The Hong Kong presentation traces that open-ended method across five decades of painting, in which thin washes of colour, signs and fragments of script are laid down on unprimed canvas with an improvisational directness. To mark the opening, the Giorgio Griffa Foundation is hosting a talk in collaboration with the Italian Cultural Institute of Hong Kong on 16 October — a programme that underlines the institutional dimension of the presentation, framing the show as a meeting between the artist's archive and a city encountering his work for the first time. For Hong Kong audiences, the exhibition offers an entry point into one of the most sustained painting practices of the post-war Italian generation: a method in which improvisation, repetition and the material behaviour of paint on unprimed canvas remain the central drama, decade after decade. The overview format — thirteen cycles sampled across four of them — invites viewers to read the work as a single continuous investigation rather than a sequence of periods. The exhibition is one of three October launches across the gallery's spaces, alongside Jonathan Gardner's 'The Studio' in London and Dominique Fung's first Italian solo show in Milan.
