MASSIMODECARLO opens 'The Trace of Things' on 15 October 2026 at its Milan space — the first solo exhibition in Italy by Dominique Fung, the Canadian artist of Chinese descent. The show runs to 18 November 2026. The exhibition brings together a new body of work: paintings, jewellery boxes, and — shown for the first time — her drawings. The title turns on what a trace is: what remains after the thing itself is gone, the imprint of a leaf in stone, the outline of a wing, the mark a hand leaves on a page. Each of the works is, in its own way, a trace. Fung's practice moves between image and object, often pairing painterly surfaces with intimate, crafted containers for memory. The jewellery boxes function as small architectures for recollection — objects that hold, hide and stage personal histories — while the paintings work at a larger, more theatrical scale. Showing her drawings publicly for the first time adds a new register to that dialogue between the painted image and the hand's direct mark. For a Canadian artist of Chinese descent showing for the first time in Italy, the exhibition also stages a meeting of visual languages: references that run through her work — from art-historical painting to diasporic memory — find a new context in Milan, a city whose own layered histories of image-making offer an apt setting for work about what remains after things are gone. The Milan opening is part of a trio of October launches across the gallery's spaces, alongside Jonathan Gardner's 'The Studio' in London and Giorgio Griffa's first Asian solo show in Hong Kong.
