200,000 Visitors Later, Manifesta's Church-Hopping Ruhr Edition Closes Its Doors
Manifesta 16 Ruhr has closed after a 15-week run with around 200,000 visitors. The nomadic biennial turned twelve vacant or deconsecrated churches across Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum into free exhibition venues.
The 16th edition of the European nomadic biennial Manifesta has come to an end in Germany's Ruhr region. After 15 weeks, Manifesta 16 Ruhr closed with approximately 200,000 visitors, according to KUNSTFORUM International, which reported the figures on 14 October 2026.
The edition was built around a striking curatorial premise: twelve empty, deconsecrated or repurposed churches in Duisburg, Essen, Gelsenkirchen and Bochum were converted into temporary exhibition spaces and meeting places. With admission free throughout, the biennial used these sacred buildings to investigate how such structures might be used in the future, at a time when churches across Germany are closing at a rapid pace. Programming ranged from tea gardens to basketball courts and neighbourhood meeting points, all conceived as invitations to encounter as well as to look.
Beyond the exhibitions, the biennial staged 187 events that drew more than 9,400 visitors, while its Manifesta 16+ programme supported 16 additional projects initiated locally across ten surrounding cities. The scale of participation suggests the church-as-venue concept resonated well beyond the art audience, anchoring contemporary art in everyday civic life.
Some projects are designed to outlive the biennial. The tea garden installed at St. Bonifatius in Gelsenkirchen, for example, is expected to continue as part of the International Garden Exhibition 2027, giving the edition a tangible afterlife in the region's urban landscape. The Ruhr edition ran from 21 June to 4 October 2026 and was the 16th outing of the nomadic biennial, which moves to a new host region each time. The previous edition took place in Barcelona in 2024, drawing more than 290,000 visits.
