Lisson Gallery in New York is presenting Hiroshi Sugimoto: Unnatural Habitat, the artist's third solo exhibition with the gallery, from 15 September to 24 October 2026 at 504 West 24th Street. The show revisits the American Museum of Natural History dioramas that launched Sugimoto's career in 1975: alongside the celebrated black-and-white Diorama series — including Polar Bear (1975), the first photograph he made as an artist — it presents new photographs taken on a return visit fifty years later, plus four new colour works printed on washi paper and mounted as traditional Japanese byōbu folding screens. The exhibition turns photography's claim to truth inside out: the camera records the museum's artificial habitats with complete accuracy, producing images of nature that are entirely constructed.
