Lévy Gorvy Dayan in New York is showing Pierre Soulages: Paintings on Paper, from 17 September to 24 October 2026. The exhibition gathers 22 works made between 1963 and 2004 in ink, gouache and walnut stain — the majority never previously exhibited — presented in collaboration with the artist's widow, Colette Soulages. Paper was Soulages's first support, and the show argues it was never a mere preliminary stage: the paper works often anticipated developments he later brought to canvas, with pigment's behaviour — sinking, bleeding, sealing — shaped by the support's own absorbency and resistance.
