Lars Muller Publishers is launching Theo Deutinger's 'All About U.S.', a graphic survey marking 250 years of American independence, with two United States launch events this weekend. Deutinger discusses the book in New York on 24 October 2026 at the artbook and MoMA PS1 Bookstore in Long Island City, followed by a question-and-answer session and signing. A second launch takes place in Los Angeles on 25 October at artbook and Hauser and Wirth.
The book takes the semiquincentennial, celebrated on 4 July 2026, as its occasion, and sets out to challenge familiar stories about the country's founding. Through a concise graphic language and a facts-based narrative, it questions assumptions such as the idea that the United States was founded on empty land by a select group of exceptional people committed to the world's first liberal constitution. The 192-page volume, illustrated with 162 images, also confronts the transatlantic slave trade, a deep-rooted sense of unlimited expansion, and the spread of half-formed technological ideas.
Deutinger, an architect, writer and curator, presents American and European history as a shared and troubled project rather than a simple success story. By weighing achievements against failures, the book argues that optimism about the future depends on recognising mistakes and facing difficult periods with unity.
The launches put the author in conversation with Daniel Jonas Roche in New York and Shane Reiner-Roth in Los Angeles, giving audiences on both coasts a chance to hear how the book's visual argument was built. The volume is priced at 48 euros, Swiss francs or pounds, and $50 in the United States.
