A debut solo exhibition by KWAK SHIN, the artist name used by Hanmi Semiconductor chairman Kwak Dong-shin, closed with an unusual result for a first show: 63 works sold for a combined 1.2695 billion won. The exhibition, titled ENDLESS, ran from August 28 to September 15 at the Seoul Auction Gangnam Center in Seoul's Gangnam district. The show ranged from large installations combining aluminum objects on canvas to smaller pieces. Kwak works with the metals at the center of the semiconductor equipment and automobile industries, translating them into an artistic language through AutoCAD design, computer numerical control milling and industrial robots. An official at Seoul Auction, which hosted the show, said the originality of this approach drew collector interest and produced an exceptional sales result. Series on view included Endless Love, built on the heart shape; Super Rich, using the dollar sign; and Forever Young, symbolized by a clock with no hands. The artist has said he drew on the bold color and serial methods of Yayoi Kusama and Philip Colbert and expanded them into new meaning of his own. Kwak joined Hanmi Semiconductor in 1998 and rose from staff employee to chief executive over 29 years, also spending 15 years in the automobile sales business. Long close to the art world as a collector, he began working as an artist only recently. The artist's side said the decision to donate 100 million won of the proceeds was made to add meaning to the exhibition and to realize social value through art. Kwak has been invited to the Focus Art Fair and will show work from May next year at Chelsea Industrial in New York, followed in October by the Saatchi Gallery in London and the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris.
