De Pont Museum opens first major Benelux Sigmar Polke survey since 1992
De Pont Museum in Tilburg and Cologne's Anna Polke-Stiftung have opened 'Sigmar Polke – The Knowledge of Colours', the first large solo exhibition of the artist in the Benelux region in more than three decades.

The De Pont Museum in Tilburg, in the Netherlands, has opened a major exhibition devoted to Sigmar Polke, organised together with the Anna Polke-Stiftung in Cologne. Titled 'Sigmar Polke – The Knowledge of Colours', it is presented as the highlight of the Polke anniversary year – the artist, born in 1941, would have turned 85 in 2026 – and it is the first large-scale solo exhibition of his work in the Benelux region since 1992. The exhibition is built around the idea of transformation. It follows groups of works in which Polke explored colour itself – his colour samples and colour panels – probing the physical, expressive and symbolic possibilities of pigment. The show brings together important works by Polke from various Dutch museum collections, supplemented by loans from German museums, offering a broad view of how colour functioned as both material and subject across his career, from experimentation with matter to its symbolic charge. It is curated by Kathrin Barutzki, Martijn van Nieuwenhuyzen and Maria Schnyder as part of 'Sigmar Polke. Athanor NOW', a research and outreach project initiated by the Anna Polke-Stiftung. The project revisits Polke's 1986 presentation at the Venice Biennale – the 'Athanor' installation for which he received the Golden Lion forty years ago – from a contemporary perspective, connecting his historical breakthrough to current readings of his work and asking what his alchemical approach to materials means today. 'Sigmar Polke – The Knowledge of Colours' runs at the De Pont Museum in Tilburg until 28 February 2027, giving the anniversary year's flagship exhibition an unusually long run into the new year and ample time for visitors from the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany to see it.
