KÖNIG GALERIE will present 'Bilder aus dem Dessauer Turm', an exhibition by German artist Karl Horst Hödicke, in the Vault of St. Agnes in Berlin from 13 November 2026 to 21 January 2027. The opening takes place on 12 November 2026 from 6 to 8 pm. It is the artist's seventh exhibition with the gallery.
The title refers to the nickname Hödicke once gave to the building on Dessauer Strasse in Berlin, where he lived and worked for decades. Situated near Potsdamer Platz and close to the Berlin Wall, it was for a long time the only building left standing in an otherwise desolate urban landscape — a tower in the void, as the artist saw it. The exhibition gathers paintings of his personal surroundings, from domestic scenes to floral motifs, tracing an intimate view of everyday life through expressive brushwork, humour and vitality.
Where Hödicke is best known for his vivid portraits of Berlin — its nightlife, neon signs, construction sites and iconic buildings rendered with a distinctive visual language — this exhibition turns inward. Family moments and ordinary subjects take the place of the city's public face, while the works retain the directness and chromatic force associated with one of the co-founders of the Neue Wilde movement of the early 1980s.
The exhibition is on view at KÖNIG GALERIE, Vault, Alexandrinenstrasse 118–121, 10969 Berlin. For an artist whose work has chronicled the German capital for more than half a century, the Dessauer Turm paintings offer a quieter counterpoint: a portrait of the private rooms behind the public city.
