The International Council of Museums and UNESCO have published a global survey of more than 400 museums across 90 countries on artificial intelligence in the museum sector. The findings show 57% of museums already use AI in their work, yet 55% have no internal AI policy and only 17% report providing staff training on the technology. The gap between adoption and governance points to urgent capacity needs as AI tools spread through collections, research, visitor services and interpretation. The survey, announced 17 September 2026, is intended to guide policy development and professional training at a moment when museums are being asked to respond rapidly to the technology.
