The Oakland Museum of California is presenting 'Poetics of Memory', the first museum survey of legendary Bay Area artist Mildred Howard, on view through October 18. The exhibition traces more than 50 years of her career, from early copy-machine collages to multimedia assemblages and large-scale gallery installations. Howard has long shaped the Bay Area landscape through public art commissions, including a giant golden frame at San Francisco's shipyard and blue glass etched with poetry on the Fillmore Street Bridge. Her work weaves American history with everyday experience, using ordinary objects, shifting scale and lyrical interpretation to engage the harmonies and dissonance between past and present.
