All 46 Prints of Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' Gather at MOA, Great Wave Shown at 150 Megapixels
The MOA Museum of Art in Atami will show all 46 prints of Katsushika Hokusai's 'Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji' at once, projecting 'The Great Wave' and 'Red Fuji' as 150-megapixel images alongside photographs of the depicted locations today, February 26 to April 2, 2027.

The complete set of Hokusai's most famous print series is coming together in one place. 'Hokusai Red Fuji & Blue Wave — Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji,' at the MOA Museum of Art in Atami, Shizuoka, from February 26 to April 2, 2027, presents all 46 prints of the series at once. The series began with 36 designs that proved so popular another ten were added, and this exhibition puts the entire run on view. Two icons anchor the show: 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' (circa 1831), known worldwide simply as 'The Great Wave,' and 'Fine Wind, Clear Morning' (circa 1831), the beloved 'Red Fuji.' Alongside works such as 'Shower Below the Summit' and views of Ushibori and Tsukuda Island, the exhibition leans on digital technology. The prints have been photographed at 150 megapixels and projected at large scale, so that details invisible to the naked eye — the texture of the paper, the craft of the printing — can be examined up close. A second strand looks at geography rather than technique. The museum researched the actual spots Hokusai depicted and documented their present-day appearance in photographs and video, displayed next to the prints. In one example, the waterway and distant Fuji of 'Buyo Tsukuda-shima' now sit beside a channelized river and clusters of high-rise buildings, making two centuries of landscape change legible. Moving between the physical prints and the enlarged digital images, the show invites visitors to toggle between the bold compositions that made the series famous and the dense accumulation of waves, clouds, trees, and figures packed into their details.
