The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden announced the acquisition of Eight, a monumental 2026 sculpture by Elmgreen & Dragset commissioned for the redesigned Sculpture Garden. Cast in stainless steel with a lacquered cyan interior and furnished with a diving board, ladder and lights, the 28-foot-tall upended pool continues the duo's decades-long pool motif. It is the artists' first commission by an East Coast museum and a crowning installation for the garden, revitalized by Hiroshi Sugimoto and due to reopen October 31. Acquired through the Joseph H. Hirshhorn Purchase Fund with support from the New Carlsberg Foundation, the work winks at Marcel Duchamp's readymades while remaining entirely handcrafted.
