Galleria Continua has mounted a double presentation for Hank Willis Thomas this autumn: a solo debut at its Paris Matignon space, titled *Afterimage*, alongside *Tomorrow I Shall Contradict Myself*, an exhibition in San Gimignano and Rome that stages Thomas's work in dialogue with Man Ray. The Italian presentation runs through 31 December 2026. The pairing puts Thomas — whose practice weaves photography, sculpture, screen printing, installation, and video into an inquiry into how historical narratives are constructed — alongside one of his declared foundational influences. Man Ray's rayographs, solarized photographs, and sculptural objects appear with Thomas's own pieces, including recent sculptures and retroreflective works and marble sculptures that borrow the material and scale of classical statuary while addressing contemporary concerns. The dialogue is deliberate rather than illustrative: where Man Ray used chance and experimentation to unsettle the photographic image, Thomas extends that instinct toward the visual and social structures that shape perceptions of history — who appears in the archive, who doesn't, and how those absences are codified. Themes of colonialism, representation, and collective memory run through the installation. The Paris solo, on view 17 September to 28 November, focuses in particular on Thomas's recent sculptures and retroreflective works. Together, the two exhibitions mark the gallery's inauguration of its collaboration with the artist, including his return to Paris for the first time in nearly twenty years.
