Kunsthalle Düsseldorf is presenting a wide-ranging exhibition devoted to Haus u r, the project that has formed the core of Gregor Schneider's practice for four decades. Haus u r 2026 opens on 17 October 2026 and runs through 17 January 2027, placing the artist's endlessly transformed rooms at the centre of one of his most substantial museum presentations in years.

Haus u r began in the 1980s at Unterheydener Straße in Mönchengladbach-Rheydt, on the premises of the artist's family factory. Since then Schneider has continuously expanded, altered, replicated and dismantled the structure, treating it less as a fixed building than as material and process. Rooms from the house have appeared in museums worldwide since 2001, when Totes Haus u r won him the Golden Lion at the German Pavilion of the Venice Biennale and drew strong reactions internationally.

Born in Rheydt in 1969, Schneider has long folded his home region's social, architectural and industrial realities into the work — from his own four walls to material drawn from the Garzweiler lignite mine. A professor of sculpting at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2016, he is represented in Germany by Sprovieri, which has previously presented the project with livestreamed rooms and filmic works including Nacht-Video.

The Düsseldorf survey positions Haus u r among the most influential spatial works in contemporary art, an ongoing gesamtkunstwerk that critics describe as layered like an onion: opening the wrong door at the wrong moment leads into hidden, peripheral spaces, and the house was designed to be fully entered only once.
