Getty Acquires Rediscovered Velazquez Portrait, Its First by the Artist
The Getty acquired a rediscovered Velazquez portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares, the first Velazquez in the museum's collection and the first on the US West Coast.
The Getty Museum has acquired a rediscovered Diego Velazquez painting, the Portrait of the Count-Duke of Olivares. It is the first Velazquez to enter the Getty's collection and the first painting by the Spanish master on the West Coast of the United States. The acquisition strengthens the museum's European old-master holdings with a major rediscovery. Museum officials called it a landmark addition to the collection. The portrait is expected to become a centerpiece of the Getty's seventeenth-century galleries.
