Georg Wilson Paints a Wilder, Human-Free Suffolk for Gainsborough's House
Georg Wilson shows new paintings inspired by the Suffolk countryside and Gainsborough's House collection at the Sudbury museum, 8 November 2026 to 18 April 2027, imagining an alternative natural world without humans.
Gainsborough's House in Sudbury will present a solo exhibition of new paintings by Georg Wilson, running 8 November 2026 to 18 April 2027. The works are inspired by the museum's collection, the surrounding Suffolk countryside and the history and folklore of the English landscape.
Wilson's practice follows the changing seasons, taking in the seasonal flora and fauna of the English countryside. Her paintings imagine an alternative natural world where humans are absent — a wild, strange version of the rural landscape drawn from walks in Suffolk and beyond, and from Gainsborough's own youthful love of the countryside he grew up in.
The exhibition's title, The Ancient Pulse of Germ and Birth, is taken from a line in Thomas Hardy's poem The Darkling Thrush. It opens on 8 November alongside two other new exhibitions at the museum: Glenn Brown's Anatomy of Trees and Monica Poole's Nature's Dark Beauty.
