Gap, the Whitney and the Lichtenstein estate launch an 18-piece clothing line for the museum's Pop survey
Gap has partnered with the Whitney Museum and the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein on an 18-piece apparel collection timed to the museum's exhibition Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, opening 11 October.

Gap, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Estate of Roy Lichtenstein have teamed up on an 18-piece apparel collection timed to the museum's forthcoming survey Roy Lichtenstein: Like New, which opens on 11 October. The Gap–Lichtenstein–Whitney collection launched on 7 October at select Gap stores, on Gap.com and at the Whitney's shop. The line puts Lichtenstein's Pop-era imagery across hoodies, button-downs, graphic T-shirts, a varsity jacket and accessories including a baseball cap, scarf and knitted throw. Works referenced include Crying Girl (1963), Standing Explosion (Black) (1965) and Cathedral #2 (1969). Prices range from $28 for a pair of socks modelled on the artist's Sock (1962) to $138 for a Standing Explosion varsity jacket. Three styles, among them a Cathedral #2 sweatshirt, are sold exclusively through the Whitney's museum store. The retail partnership coincides with Like New, a survey of more than 130 works spanning six decades of Lichtenstein's career, co-curated by Meg Onli, the Whitney's Nancy and Fred Poses curator, and artist Alex Da Corte. The exhibition examines the artist's recurring interest in duplication, mass media and the circulation of images, a theme the museum's retail team said made him a natural fit for a mass-market collaboration. Jack Sachs, the Whitney's director of retail and licensing, framed the question the project poses as what Lichtenstein's work means to consumer culture today, given how deeply the artist's practice was connected to popular culture and the process of reproduction. Frank Avila-Goldman of the Lichtenstein estate described the collection as a way of crystallising the brilliance, wit and joy of the artist's work into wearable form through a pairing of three American classics.
