Gagosian is presenting six major new large-scale paintings by Albert Oehlen at its booth D14 at Frieze London 2026, which runs from October 14 to 18 in Regent's Park. The presentation is conceived as a focused solo outing for the German painter within the fair's main section. The paintings incorporate abstractions of the image of a man with an extravagant mustache, an art-historical reference Oehlen has returned to repeatedly, while remaining immersed in the present through twists, fragments, and myriad shapes that resist conceptual resolution. Active color makes itself felt in lines and forms, layers and interjections, in ways that seem to emit light and even sound, according to the gallery. Oehlen has described the engine of the new works as maximum chance, a self-imposed system in which marks and passages overlap and permeate one another, appearing to move around and even through the canvas. Each painting contains numerous elements, none static or complete, extending his long project of basing painterly decisions on a sort of self-imposed cancellation of his own powers. The booth anchors one of several heavyweight solo presentations at this year's fair, which brings together 176 galleries across 43 countries with an emphasis on new work and discovery. The 2026 editions are the 24th, with almost 300 galleries from 48 countries across Frieze London and Frieze Masters in Regent's Park, alongside the free outdoor Frieze Sculpture display curated by Fatos Ustek. Highlights among the new canvases include an Untitled oil from 2026 measuring 96 by 90 inches and a group of Untitled paintings from 2020 to 2026 at around 98 inches square.
