Gagosian Reunites Dan Flavin's Nine 'European Couples' Works for the First Time in France
Gagosian's Le Bourget space presents 'Dan Flavin: European Couples' from 18 October 2026 to 3 April 2027, uniting all nine fluorescent corner-light works from the artist's 1966–71 series for the first time in France.
Gagosian will present 'Dan Flavin: European Couples' at its Le Bourget gallery, opening 18 October 2026 and running through 3 April 2027. The exhibition brings together all nine fluorescent corner-light works from the artist's 'European Couples' series (1966–71) — the first time the complete series has been shown in France.
Five of the works arrive on loan from the Estate of Dan Flavin, joined by four from the collection of Heiner Friedrich, co-founder of the Dia Art Foundation and the driving force behind the Dan Flavin Art Institute established in Bridgehampton in 1983 (now Dia Bridgehampton). Installed as a unified whole, the nine works offer a rare chance to experience the series as Flavin conceived it: his fluorescent 'situations', set in dialogue with architecture, colour, seriality, and the personal dedications embedded in each title.
The series was made at the height of Flavin's engagement with fluorescent light as a sculptural medium. The corner configurations — works tucked into the junction of wall and floor — turn the room itself into part of the piece, flooding the architecture with coloured light. Showing the nine together foregrounds how repetition and variation carry meaning in his practice: the same format, radically different chromatic and spatial effects. It is also a reminder of how deliberately Flavin courted the ephemeral — off-the-shelf tubes and fixtures, arranged with almost liturgical precision, producing effects that no documentation quite captures.
Among the works is 'untitled (to Christina and Bruno)' (1966–71), typical of the series' blend of rigorous formal structure and private dedication. For Paris-area audiences, the exhibition is the most complete encounter with this pivotal body of work to have been staged in the country.
