The exhibition is built around the surviving pages of an album assembled by Sophia Elizabeth Plowden between 1777 and 1790, containing lyrics in Persian, Urdu, Hindi and Punjabi alongside illustrations of performers, dancers and courtesans. To evoke the courtly culture the album captures, the museum pairs it with watercolours of Lucknow sites, monumental textiles and live performances of the music Plowden recorded. The display draws on the Fitzwilliam's holdings of Indian painting, including folios from ragamala sets. It runs until 7 March 2027.
