Anton Kern Gallery opens two exhibitions on 11 November 2026, both running to 16 January 2027 at its 16 East 55th Street space in New York. Ellen Gronemeyer presents Déjà Vu, her third solo exhibition in New York, while Paweł Althamer shows Artist/Studio.

For Déjà Vu, the Berlin-based Gronemeyer, born in Fulda in 1979, presents twelve new oil paintings and, for the first time, five small tables. It is her third outing with the gallery, following Frozen in 2018 and Tausendmal Du in 2021, and the new work continues her densely painted, dark yet luminous world of youthful figures and improbable scenes.

Gronemeyer studied at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg and has built her reputation on densely painted, dark yet luminous canvases. Her previous show at the gallery, Tausendmal Du in 2021, gathered nineteen paintings of sparkling, turbulent surfaces; a 2024 exhibition, Newcomer, at Kadel Willborn in Düsseldorf, continued the same thread. The five small tables in Déjà Vu are a new departure, bringing her painterly world into three dimensions for the first time.

Althamer, the Polish artist known for sculpture and for performances that turn the artist's life and studio into material, takes the second space with Artist/Studio. The pairing sets two very different practices side by side: Gronemeyer's inward, painterly theatre against Althamer's outward, process-driven approach to making.

November is a crowded month on the New York gallery calendar, and the double opening is a reminder of how Kern's programme works: painters with long gallery relationships, given room to show new work at scale, with the two exhibitions in dialogue across the building.
