Bologna's MAMbo unveils definitive catalogue of Fabio Mauri's work for artist's centenary
MAMbo in Bologna and Studio Fabio Mauri have announced the print publication of the Fabio Mauri catalogue raisonné, edited by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, with more than 3,600 works. The book arrives a century after Mauri's birth and precedes a major survey exhibition at MAMbo in February 2027, travelling to MUDAM Luxembourg that June.
Bologna's modern art museum is marking a century since the birth of one of Italy's most restless post-war artists with the definitive reference book on his work. MAMbo, the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, together with Studio Fabio Mauri, has announced the print publication of the Fabio Mauri catalogue raisonné, a project edited by curator Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev. The English edition is published by Hatje Cantz and the Italian edition by Allemandi, following an online version of the catalogue that went live in 2025. Mauri, who was born in Rome in 1926 and died in 2009, moved between visual art, writing, teaching and publishing across a career of more than five decades. He is best remembered for an early and sustained attention to the power of the screen, the schermo, and to the way communication technologies were mobilized by twentieth-century fascisms. The new publication draws on many years of cataloguing his research strands and presents more than 3,600 works with descriptions, alongside an introductory essay by Christov-Bakargiev, new texts by scholars including Laura Cherubini and Francesca Alfano Miglietti, an unpublished interview by Hans Ulrich Obrist and a contribution from the philosopher Giacomo Marramao. The museum plans to present the catalogue at MAMbo on the afternoon of Saturday, 10 October, as part of the twenty-second Giornata del Contemporaneo and a study day on art criticism held in memory of Giovanni Maria Accame. The book also precedes a major survey: Mauri's works will open at MAMbo on 4 February 2027 and run until 2 May, curated by Christov-Bakargiev with Lorenzo Balbi, before travelling in a new configuration to MUDAM Luxembourg in June 2027. The catalogue raisonné is produced by MAMbo's civic museums network in Bologna together with Studio Fabio Mauri, the association dedicated to the artist's experimental work, with support from the Italian Ministry of Culture's Directorate General for Contemporary Creativity under the Italian Council programme. Arriving a century after Mauri's birth, the publication aims to secure his position in the record of European post-war art and to give researchers and collectors a single authoritative account of an unusually wide-ranging oeuvre.
