Dreweatts staged its Fine Silver & The Art of Dining sale on Tuesday 22 September, an auction celebrating the craft and theatre of entertaining. The event drew international bidding across the sale and closed with a total of £1,086,860, representing 182% of the pre-sale estimate and a sell-through rate of 95%. Standout lots included a set of four George I cast silver candlesticks by Samuel Margas from London 1724, which realised £25,600, and a Russian silver trompe-l'oeil cigar box by Dmitry Gorbanov, Moscow 1871, which sold for £19,200. Other notable results came from a pair of Irish Provincial oval sauceboats, probably by Henry Dowens of Limerick circa 1780 (£10,880), and an Indian Colonial silver-gilt trophy cup and cover by Hamilton & Co. of Calcutta circa 1830 (£15,360). James Nicholson, head of Dreweatts' Luxury department, said the results showed that silver remained far more than an object for the cabinet, describing the lots as pieces with history, personality and presence that still brought theatre to the dining table. The sale also brought together distinctive single-owner material, including gifts presented at a wedding in Germany in 1911, silver and objects from the Chandon de Briailles family in France, and a collection of Stuart Devlin table silver.
