Bellotto's View of Vienna's Karlskirche Heads to Dorotheum With €600,000 Top Estimate
Bernardo Bellotto's view of the Karlskirche in Vienna, considered an autograph work and the prototype for other versions of the composition, will star in Dorotheum's Old Masters auction on October 21 with an estimate of €400,000 to €600,000.

A previously unpublished view of Vienna's Karlskirche by Bernardo Bellotto, only recently discovered in an Austrian private collection, will headline Dorotheum's Old Masters sale on October 21, 2026, carrying an estimate of €400,000 to €600,000. The painting is regarded as a fully autograph work by the Venetian vedutista and is thought to be the prototype for other versions of the composition, a distinction that should sharpen bidder interest. Dorotheum has positioned the painting as the star lot of its October 21 Old Masters sale in Vienna, and the top estimate of €600,000 would place it among the sale's most valuable offerings. The 1759–61 Vienna sojourn came at the height of Bellotto's career, when his reputation as Canaletto's nephew and most prominent pupil had already carried him to the Saxon court at Dresden and to Munich. In Vienna he worked under imperial patronage, painting panoramic views of the capital at the commission of Empress Maria Theresa. His Vienna period produced some of the most admired cityscapes of the 18th century, including the celebrated "View of Vienna from the Belvedere" now held by the Kunsthistorisches Museum. The Karlskirche canvas belongs to that Viennese chapter. Bellotto's precise architectural rendering and luminous handling of the Habsburg capital's landmarks made his Vienna views prized by aristocratic patrons, and surviving autograph examples rarely appear on the open market — a factor Dorotheum is counting on ahead of the October sale. Born in Venice in 1722, Bellotto built his reputation on meticulously observed urban panoramas across Dresden, Warsaw, Munich, and Vienna. With Old Masters continuing to reward fresh-to-market works with strong provenance, the Karlskirche view arrives as one of the season's notable continental consignments.
