Beckwith Adds Chacon, Bonsu, Junghaus and Segal to Documenta 16 Team
Documenta 16 artistic director Naomi Beckwith has expanded her curatorial team, naming Raven Chacon curator-at-large and Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal as curatorial advisers ahead of the June 2027 opening in Kassel.
Naomi Beckwith, artistic director of Documenta 16, has widened her curatorial team with four new appointments as the quinquennial exhibition moves toward its opening in Kassel next year.
Raven Chacon joins as curator-at-large, while Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal take up roles as curatorial advisers. They will work alongside Beckwith's existing team of Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodriguez Castro and Xiaoyu Weng.
Documenta, staged once every five years in Kassel, Germany, is among the most influential recurring exhibitions in the art world, and each edition's curatorial make-up is read closely as a signal of its direction. The 16th edition is scheduled to run from 12 June to 19 September 2027.
The appointments bring together a composer and artist in Chacon, a curator and writer in Bonsu, a Roma art historian and curator in Junghaus, and a curator in Segal, broadening the range of perspectives shaping the show. Their combined experience spans contemporary art, sound, photography and socially engaged practice.
With the team now in place, attention turns to the artist list and the themes Beckwith will set for an edition that arrives five years after a previous Documenta was overshadowed by controversy. The expanded team suggests an edition built on many voices rather than a single curatorial line.
Founded in Kassel in 1955, Documenta grew from a post-war survey of modern art into a bellwether for the field, with each edition's curatorial choices debated far beyond Germany. Beckwith's edition will be the first under her direction, and the expanded team now carries the weight of that history into its final year of preparation.
