Documenta 16 Names Four Curators, Led by Pulitzer Winner Raven Chacon
Documenta 16 has appointed Raven Chacon, Osei Bonsu, Timea Junghaus and Noam Segal to its curatorial team under artistic director Naomi Beckwith, ahead of the exhibition in Kassel from 12 June to 19 September 2027.
Documenta 16 has completed its curatorial team with the appointment of four curators who will work under artistic director Naomi Beckwith on the 2027 edition of the Kassel exhibition. The team brings together figures from the United States, Britain and Europe, and it signals an edition built around improvisation, sound and questions of identity.
Raven Chacon, the composer and artist who won the Pulitzer Prize for Music in 2022, the first Indigenous artist to do so, joins as Curator-at-Large. Osei Bonsu, the Jorge M. Pérez Senior Curator at Tate Modern, brings experience of large-scale international programming. Timea Junghaus, a Roma curator who was the founding executive director of the European Roma Institute for Arts and Culture from 2017 to 2025 and organised the first Roma Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2007, adds a perspective on Europe's largest minority. Noam Segal, the Guggenheim's LG Electronics Associate Curator, completes the group.
The core team also includes Carla Acevedo-Yates, Romi Crawford, Mayra A. Rodriguez and Xiaoyu Weng. Documenta 16 will run in Kassel from 12 June to 19 September 2027, taking improvisation as its theme, a choice that fits a team with strong roots in music and performance.
The appointments come at a sensitive moment for documenta, which has faced intense scrutiny over its recent editions. Beckwith's team will be expected to rebuild trust while delivering an exhibition that speaks to a wide public, and the breadth of the curatorial group suggests an attempt to open the show to voices that have often been at its margins.
