Dieter Rams's official retrospective finally reaches Japan, opening at Tamagawa University's new gallery
The Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation's official touring exhibition "Less, but Better" opens November 17 at Sala Blu, the new gallery at Tamagawa University's Kaminoge campus — the first time the authoritative Rams retrospective has been staged in Japan.

The official travelling retrospective of Dieter Rams is coming to Japan for the first time. Titled "Dieter Rams: A Look Back and Ahead / Less, but Better," the exhibition opens November 17 at Sala Blu, the new gallery inside Kaminoge Cultural Crossing, the cultural hub Tamagawa University opened this April to mark its 90th anniversary. It runs through December 16.
The show is organised and supervised by the Dieter and Ingeborg Rams Foundation, which makes it the authoritative version of the designer's story rather than a borrowed-object survey. Rams, born in Germany in 1932, joined Braun in 1955 and went on to define the look of postwar consumer electronics — from the SK 4 record player of 1956 to radios and audio equipment whose clean lines still echo through today's product design.
At the centre of the exhibition is the philosophy summed up in the show's subtitle: "Less, but better." Rams distilled his approach into ten principles of good design, arguing that design should be innovative, useful and environmentally responsible, among other tenets. The touring show traces how those ideas grew out of his decades at Braun and why they continue to shape designers working in an age of software and AI-generated form.
For Tokyo audiences, the venue adds a layer of meaning. Kaminoge Cultural Crossing opened only this spring as the university's new platform for public-facing culture, and the Rams retrospective serves as the opening exhibition of its Sala Blu gallery. Expect student designers to be a large part of the audience — the foundation's involvement suggests the display will lean on original objects and archival material rather than reproductions.
