Debashish Paul's Boneless Child Imagines a Queer Body Unbound at Ginny on Frederick
Debashish Paul will present his first solo exhibition in London at Ginny on Frederick: 'A Birth of a Boneless Child' opens on 6 November 2026 and runs until 16 December, with new textile sculptures made with women from the artist's home village in West Bengal.
Ginny on Frederick will present Debashish Paul's first solo exhibition in London, titled 'A Birth of a Boneless Child'. The show opens on Friday 6 November 2026 with an evening reception from 6 to 8pm, and remains on view at the Clerkenwell gallery until 16 December. The announcement comes from the gallery itself, which describes the exhibition as Paul's London solo debut.
The exhibition takes its starting point from a story in the fifteenth-century Krittivasi Ramayan, composed in Phulia in West Bengal, where Paul was raised. In the tale, two widowed queens conceive a child together who is born without bones. Paul returns to that figure through a new group of textile sculptures, made in collaboration with women from his village, turning an old story of an unconventional birth into a contemporary reflection on the body.
Through the boneless child, the artist considers what queer embodiment might look like when it is not held to prescribed forms. The works draw on inherited traditions of making, learned and shared within his home community, and use them to imagine a body that is not bound by the shapes it is expected to take. The emphasis on collaboration matters here: the sculptures are not only about a village tradition, they are made with the people who carry it.
Emami Art in Kolkata supported the realisation of the exhibition. For visitors, the show offers a first chance in London to see Paul's textile-based practice at solo-exhibition scale, and to follow a single, strange figure — a child born without bones — from a centuries-old text into a present-day argument about identity, kinship and freedom.
