Centro Botín in Santander has opened 'Of Day or Night', the first exhibition in Spain dedicated to Brazilian artist Solange Pessoa (b. 1961, Ferros). Curated by Bárbara Rodríguez Muñoz, the show runs from 10 October 2026 to 28 March 2027 and presents a comprehensive overview of Pessoa's multidisciplinary practice. The exhibition connects the artist's early research and works from the 1990s with the ambitious formal developments of the same investigations in the present decade. Works come from the artist's studio as well as institutional and private collections, alongside two bespoke installations created specifically for the architecture and light of Centro Botín's gallery spaces overlooking Santander Bay. Her practice — spanning sculpture, painting, video, performance, installation and drawing — explores nature, memory, the body, spirituality and the cycles of life, weaving Brazilian modernism, colonial Baroque and Indigenous cosmologies together with influences from Land Art, Arte Povera and Surrealism. Pessoa's work is deeply rooted in the landscape of Minas Gerais, historically one of Brazil's key mining regions. Through organic and mineral materials — feathers, seeds, stones, wool, bones, hair, earth, bronze and clay — she evokes metamorphosis and an oneiric engagement with landscape and matter. The closing work 'Origo' (2010–2026), produced by Fundación Botín, arranges a multitude of sculptures on a ground of clay, bronze and organic elements. The title refers to Pessoa's universe, where opposites — the corporeal and the transcendent, darkness and light, the human and the animal — cease to function as opposites and merge, with the spiritual emerging from matter itself.
