€295,000 Faber Portrait Sets Artist Record as Bonhams' Paris Sales Total €1.7M
Bonhams' two Paris sales on 4 November totalled €1,713,450, led by a record €295,000 for a portrait attributed to Conrad Faber von Kreuznach and €128,600 for Maurice Leloir's four historical scenes.

Bonhams' two Paris sales on 4 November brought in €1,713,450 between them, the house said, with fresh-to-market Old Masters driving bidding well past estimates. The morning sale of a Flemish connoisseur's collection made €700,100, while the afternoon Old Master and 19th Century Paintings sale totalled €1,013,350.
The standout was a portrait of a gentleman in a Renaissance beret attributed to Conrad Faber von Kreuznach, which reached €295,000 against a €40,000–60,000 estimate — a new auction record for the German Renaissance painter, whose surviving output runs to only about 40 works, mostly portraits of Frankfurt's patrician elite. A portrait of Catharina van Noordt, Jacob Jordaens' wife, followed at €154,200, while two devotional paintings by Erasmus Quellinus II made €39,000 and €28,600, both above their estimates.
The afternoon session was led by Alexey Korovin's Paris de nuit, which sold for €141,400, more than three times its high estimate. Close behind came Maurice Leloir's set of four watercolour-and-gouache scenes of 18th-century France — a frigate visit, a theatre parade, a royal procession and Madame du Barry — which sold together for €128,600, roughly double the top of their €60,000–80,000 estimate. Leloir, a noted specialist in historical costume who counted Guy de Maupassant among his friends, built the scenes around the dress and ceremony of Louis XV's France.
Two works by Eugène Delacroix also outperformed: a study for the figure of Liberty in Liberty Leading the People reached €28,600, nearly five times its high estimate, and a portrait of Joséphine de Forget, the artist's lifelong friend, made €20,800 against a €6,000–8,000 estimate. Isaak Levitan's tree study fetched €90,200, and the house's Paris Classics sale the following day added €710,710, with 91% of lots sold by value.
