Bonhams scheduled two 20th and 21st Century art auctions at its New Bond Street saleroom to run alongside Frieze Week, an evening sale on 15 October followed by a 61-lot day sale the next afternoon.

The evening sale, comprising just 20 lots, was led by Eugène Boudin's 1884 painting Trouville. Scène de Plage, which sold for £512,500 including buyer's premium. Fernando Botero's 1996 canvas Homme à Table followed at £448,500, while David Hockney's Cataract Hotel Aswan, offered from a Sydney private collection, reached £358,900. Jean Dubuffet's 1952 Paysage Américain made £192,500 and Frank Auerbach's Untitled realised £186,100. A 1911 bronze of a male puma by Rembrandt Bugatti, cast in 1924, carried an estimate of £220,000 to £320,000.

The day sale was again dominated by Botero: the 1988 bronze Ballerina, number five from an edition of six, achieved £307,700, and Still Life with Oranges from 1989 sold for £256,500. Alex Katz's 2000 portrait Bill fetched £166,900, while Pablo Picasso's unique 1948 ceramic Le Banderillero made £77,300. More modest results included Alfred Sisley's Les oies at £45,300, Maurice Utrillo's Montmartre at £32,500, Paul Signac's Saint-Servan at £32,500, and Billy Childish's Man Seated at £28,600.

Much of the material came from a single Sydney collection assembled over a lifetime by a devoted couple, whose holdings spanned stand-out Botero oils, Hockney works on paper, and a pastel by Berthe Morisot. The consignments gave Bonhams a visible role during London's busiest art week, at prices below the eight-figure territory claimed by the larger houses' evening sales.

Bonhams will continue its autumn calendar with 20th and 21st Century art sales in New York, Hong Kong and Paris through November and December.
