Record-Chasing Van Gogh Anchors $450M Impressionist Sale at Sotheby's New York
Sotheby's will sell a dozen Impressionist and modern paintings assembled by Argentine collectors Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and Carlos Pedro Blaquier, valued near $450 million. A Van Gogh of chestnut blossoms, estimated around $180 million, could set a new auction record for the artist. The works go on view in London on September 30 ahead of a November sale in New York.
Sotheby's has announced it will offer the collection of late Argentine collectors Nelly Arrieta de Blaquier and Carlos Pedro Blaquier — twelve paintings by Impressionist and modern masters — in New York this November, with a combined estimated value of about $450 million. The headline lot is Van Gogh's Châtaignier en fleurs roses et blanches, estimated at around $180 million; at that level it would break the artist's auction record. A Cézanne, Arlequin, is expected to fetch about $120 million. The paintings go on view in London on September 30 before the November sale. It ranks among the most valuable single-owner collections of Impressionist art ever brought to auction.
