The Musée d'Orsay has opened 'A Statue for Liberty: Bartholdi's Dream', an immersive virtual-reality experience spread across almost 700 square metres of the museum's Amont Gallery. Wearing headsets, visitors follow in Auguste Bartholdi's footsteps from the first sketches to the finished monument, passing through a reconstruction of the Gaget, Gauthier & Cie workshop where nearly 600 craftspeople hammered the copper colossus into shape, and encountering the engineering solutions Gustave Eiffel devised for the unprecedented structure. The journey moves from politician Edouard Laboulaye's drawing room to the banks of the Nile, the Philadelphia World's Fair where the torch was unveiled to win public support, and the political upheavals of late-19th-century France and America. Developed from extensive historical research with the museum's curators advising GEDEON Experiences and BackLight Studio, the experience is co-produced with VIVE Arts and the Musée d'Orsay with the participation of the Musée Bartholdi in Colmar. It runs from September 15, 2026 to January 31, 2027.
