Atelier Van Lieshout turns bipolar in Vienna
Galerie Krinzinger opens Bipolar, a new exhibition by Atelier Van Lieshout, on 3 November in Vienna, with Shuvo Rafiqul's Poignancy in the showroom alongside it.
Galerie Krinzinger opens Bipolar, an exhibition by Atelier Van Lieshout, on 3 November 2026, running to 23 December at its main gallery on Seilerstätte 16 in Vienna. In the showroom at the same address, Shuvo Rafiqul presents Poignancy over the same dates.
Atelier Van Lieshout, founded in 1995 by the Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout, works across art, design and architecture, dissolving the boundaries between sculpture, utilitarian objects and the spaces people live in. The collective is known for proposing alternative, collectively organised ways of working and living, and for installations that provoke through extreme rationalism: two of its large projects, The Disciplinator, a cage-like construction for 72 inmates, and The Technocrat, a closed cycle of food, alcohol, excrement and energy, were shown at Vienna's MAK.
The title Bipolar suggests a show built on opposites, in keeping with a practice that has always swung between utopia and dystopia, function and provocation. Van Lieshout, born in Ravenstein in 1963 and based in Rotterdam, has kept the Atelier deliberately hard to categorise for three decades, moving between furniture, sculpture, architecture and social experiment.
Krinzinger's winter programme pairs the Dutch collective with Rafiqul, a younger voice in the showroom, while the gallery's second space, Krinzinger Schottenfeld, continues its Works on Paper group show to 14 November, with works by Siegfried Anzinger, Monica Bonvicini, Hermann Nitsch, Meret Oppenheim and Bjarne Melgaard, among others. Bipolar is the main gallery's headline exhibition for the final weeks of the year.
