Prado Masterpieces Arrive in Brooklyn as a Full-Scale VR Exhibition
Masterpieces: A Virtual Experience of the Museo del Prado opened October 1 at Powerhouse Arts in Brooklyn and runs through December 20, offering virtual-reality encounters with five of the Madrid museum's greatest paintings, from Las Meninas to The Garden of Earthly Delights.

Five of the Museo del Prado's most celebrated paintings are now on view in Brooklyn — virtually. Masterpieces: A Virtual Experience of the Museo del Prado opened on October 1 at Powerhouse Arts and runs through December 20, 2026, inviting visitors to step inside works including Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas and Hieronymus Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights through immersive virtual-reality technology. The exhibition, developed by Acciona Cultura, translates the Madrid museum's collection into full-scale digital environments that visitors can explore rather than simply look at. Rather than hanging reproductions on walls, the show places audiences within the pictorial space of the paintings, offering a way of encountering Old Master works that no conventional loan exhibition could provide — and without moving a single fragile canvas across the Atlantic. The Brooklyn presentation marks another step in the Prado's willingness to experiment with how its collection reaches audiences beyond Spain. Virtual and immersive formats have become a significant strand of museum programming worldwide, and the participation of one of Europe's great encyclopedic museums lends the genre considerable institutional weight. The run opens with a dance party on October 3, signalling that the organizers see the project as a social experience as much as an educational one. For New Yorkers, it is a chance to spend time with paintings that would otherwise require a trip to Madrid — reimagined for an audience that increasingly expects art to be something you enter, not just something you see. The project also arrives as museums on both sides of the Atlantic race to translate blockbuster collections into ticketed immersive formats, and the Prado's participation gives that fast-growing genre a new level of institutional credibility.
