Hilla Rebay, the artist who shaped the Guggenheim, gets her own moment at Independent

Weinstein Gallery is showing paintings by Hilla Rebay at Independent 20th Century, on view September 24–27, 2026 at Sotheby's New York, The Breuer, 945 Madison Avenue. Rebay was the artist and adviser who helped shape the Guggenheim's collection of non-objective art and, after Guggenheim's death, donated much of her own work to the museum. The works on offer range from $35,000 to $850,000 — the top end far exceeding her auction record of $182,700 for 'Con Fuoco' in 2024. The presentation also includes artists Rebay championed, including Rudolf Bauer, John Mason and Wassily Kandinsky. A gallery representative described her museum-building itself as the biggest collage she ever made.
