'The Stars We Do Not See': largest Aboriginal art show in North America lands in Portland
The Portland Art Museum opened The Stars We Do Not See: Australian Indigenous Art on 5 September 2026, the only West Coast presentation of what is billed as the largest exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art ever shown in North America, with more than 130 works by 142 artists drawn from the National Gallery of Victoria.
The Portland Art Museum is presenting the only West Coast stop of The Stars We Do Not See: Australian Indigenous Art, described as the largest exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art ever shown in North America. Organised by the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC, the exhibition is on view at the Portland museum from 5 September 2026 through 3 January 2027. Drawn entirely from the NGV's collection, it brings together more than 130 works by 142 artists, several working collaboratively, tracing Indigenous Australian art from the late 19th century to the present. Many of the works have never before left Australia. Bank of America is the North America tour sponsor of the landmark show.
