Two stolen Eastman Johnson paintings recovered nearly 50 years later
Two paintings by Eastman Johnson stolen from New York galleries in 1978 were identified and are being returned to their rightful owners with the help of the Art Loss Register.
Shannon's Fine Art Auctioneers has helped recover two paintings by Eastman Johnson (1824-1906) - Mary and Her Lamb and The Young Mother - stolen from the Kenneth Lux Gallery and Hirschl and Adler Galleries in New York in 1978. A Long Island antiques dealer recognised the works in an estate collection and alerted Shannon's, whose records and a check with the Art Loss Register confirmed the theft reports from April and May 1978. The family that had inherited the paintings agreed to facilitate their return to the rightful owners.
