White Cube Bermondsey will present 'Des Malers Atelier', a solo exhibition of recent paintings by Anselm Kiefer, from 25 November 2026 to 24 January 2027. The show opens with a preview on Tuesday 24 November from 6 to 8pm at the gallery on Bermondsey Street in London.

The title translates as 'The Painter's Studio', and the exhibition turns its attention to the place where Kiefer's monumental works are made. Born in Germany in 1945, Kiefer is among the most significant European painters of the post-war period, known for vast canvases that confront history, mythology and landscape through layered paint, ash, straw and lead. He studied under Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Academy in the 1970s, and has spent five decades making paintings that ask how a nation pictures its own past.

A show of recent paintings, rather than a retrospective, 'Des Malers Atelier' offers a view of where that practice stands now. The studio is both subject and setting: the room in which images of history are produced becomes itself the thing being pictured, with the tools and traces of making folded into the work.

The Bermondsey presentation continues a long association between Kiefer and White Cube, whose London spaces have hosted several of his large-scale exhibitions. It also coincides with a museum show, 'Anselm Kiefer: All That Is the Case', at Kunsthalle Würth in Schwäbisch Hall, Germany, on view until 3 October 2027. For visitors, it is a chance to see new work by an artist whose paintings have shaped how a generation pictures the past.
