Affordable Art Fair Melbourne closes 2026 edition with broad-buyer sales
A 7 September 2026 on-the-ground report finds strong transaction velocity across ages 12 to 82: Velvet Room Gallery's Bridie O'Brien placed 21 original works, Lara Scolari's 'Kakapo Dreaming' sold for AUD$6,950, and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters & Sculptors made 35 placements.

Despite cautious consumer spending, the fair demonstrated structural resilience in the entry-level and mid-tier primary market, with buyers drawn by emotional resonance, tactile materiality and direct contact with artists. Velvet Room Gallery capped a high-volume stand with three sales at AUD$7,000; Gallery 11:11's two-tiered pricing captured both entry-level and established buyers; and artist Lara Scolari called it the strongest Affordable Art Fair held in Australia to date. O'Brien's selection as campaign artist for the November Sydney edition underscores the fair's role as a primary-market engine in the Asia-Pacific.
